Fuel and oil terminals and refineries are slowly returning to operation following last week’s “superstorm” Sandy, as the government takes steps to try to get oil and fuel to the stricken region.

A shortage of fuel, especially gasoline for vehicles and generators, has led to long lines and short tempers across much of the Northeast. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday that it is likely to continue for at least several more days.

Preliminary data shows October Class 8 truck orders around 23,000 units – the highest since January.

FTR Associates, Nashville, Ind., puts the number at at 22,760, 50% higher than the previous month and much improved over third quarter averages, while ACT Research, Columbus, Inc., projects orders will approach 23,200 units for Class 8 trucks and 18,500 for medium duty Class 5-7 vehicles.

Cummins’ third-quarter revenue fell 11% from last year, as revenues from international markets dropped 21%, and net income dropped from $352 billion from last year’s $452 million.

Third-quarter revenue was $4.1 billion. Revenues in North America grew 2%. Based on the current forecast, Cummins expects full year revenues to be $17 billion.
