Negotiations are set to resume today regarding the potential East/Gulf Coast port strike on Feb. 6 between the United States Maritime Alliance and the International Longshoremen’s Association.

The talks are scheduled to last for three days and are the first meetings between the two groups since the December decision to extend the deadline.

It looks like United Parcel Service’s proposed deal to buy European package giant TNT Express will not go through, after the European Commission informed the two companies that it is working on a decision to prohibit the proposed acquisition.

UPS announced last March plans to acquire Dutch package company TNT Express for 5.16 billion euros or $6.8 billion. It would have been UPS’ biggest purchase to date.

Law enforcement officials who pulled over nearly 35,000 commercial and passenger vehicle drivers during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliances Operation Safe Driver 2012 campaign in October found that passenger car drivers continue to speed at alarming rates around commercial vehicles.

Data collected during this years weeklong event indicates that the top three reasons warnings and citations were issued to both commercial and non-commercial vehicle drivers were comparable to last year
